Mid-Atlantic Center for Cardiometabolic Health Equity (MACCHE)

Building on the research of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity, the Mid-Atlantic Center for Cardiometabolic Health Equity (MACCHE) aims to advance health equity in Maryland by tackling disparities in cardiometabolic diseases in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore (UMB) and collaboration with Morgan State University and other local institutions.

Why Cardiometabolic Diseases?

Cardiometabolic diseases - including hypertension, obesity, diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease - are some of the leading causes of death worldwide. Often co-existing in the same individuals, these conditions can have intergenerational effects and can develop and exacerbate at different points across the course of life. In the United States, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in these cardiometabolic diseases are profound.

Because cardiometabolic diseases share common prevention and management interventions, there is an urgent need to comprehensively integrate the best evidence-based strategies to overcome disparities in cardiometabolic diseases. Our MACCHE team is working to test interventions that address these disparities with a focus on multiple chronic diseases. In addition, the Center provides resources to increase the leadership of our community partners and enhance mentoring of scientists conducting disparities research in the Maryland region.

Organizational Structure

The Center is led by Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Dr. Lisa Cooper and Professor of Medicine Dr. Deidra Crews.

The research program at the Center involves:

  • 3 separate, but related, intervention studies addressing cardiometabolic disease disparities

  • 3 integrated cores (Administrative, Investigator Development and Community Engagement

  • an Executive Committee to ensure coordination of Center functions

  • a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to provide guidance on aspects of the Center’s research
